Shoreline

The Shoreline series represents a reconnection to photography for me. Creatively I was feeling uninspired and unfocused. While not an avid fan of the beach—I grew up in L.A., after all, and am sensitive to sunspots—I packed a camera bag (and a big sun hat!) and headed to Santa Monica Pier in search of…something.

Behind the lens of my camera, the crowded oceanfront and boardwalk, normally a put off, energized me; and the beaming sun, my old nemesis, captivated me, watching its light pass from land to water.

The camera changed my experience of the environment around me—from mundane and, yes, slightly annoying; to vibrant and full of possibilities. I found transcendence. This is what I love about photography.

Now, if I find myself in need of a charge, I may just head to the shoreline. I like to think we have an agreement, the beach goddess and I: She offers me inspiration; and I, in appreciation, document fragments of her sprawling beauty—individual grains of sand—as seen through my camera.
